The Benevolent Fund is part of the PCA’s on-going commitment in helping current and former players and their dependants in times of hardship, upheaval or to readjust to the world beyond the game. The fund sits at the heart of the PCA and a significant amount of money is set aside from PCA fund raising for this purpose. The Benevolent Fund became a registered charity in 2007 and a panel of trustees was established to oversee the continued development of the charity, under the chairmanship of David Ford. Benevolent issues are those that pull at everyone’s heart strings and emphasise the important work the PCA does in generating funds. We continue to support many former players in various ways, including funding operations which are not available or have a considerable waiting time under the NHS and helping those who are having difficulty adjusting to life after cricket find alternative careers. We also help dependants of former players and offer professional support and expert advice. Over the past few years the Benevolent Fund has helped a number of individuals including Winston Davis, the former West Indies, Glamorgan and Northamptonshire bowler. In 1992 a branch from a tree that he was cutting fell on Winston and consequently he has been paralysed from the chest down. A grant from the fund has paid for a specially adapted computer that Winston can operate himself, massively increasing his independence and more importantly allowing him easy contact with friends and family back in the West Indies.
